The CAA is one of the boldest steps taken by the Modi government, along with Article 370, the Ram Mandir, and the Triple Talaq. We can’t forget the protests from universities like Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University, and Shaheen Bagh when the bill was passed in Parliament on December 11, 2019. Even some popular faces around the world talked about this matter.
Many regions of the nation have erupted in opposition to the decision following the Ministry of Home Affairs’ announcement regarding the implementation of the CAA. Many people worry that the law may be utilized to deny them Indian citizenship and consider them to be illegal immigrants.
What is CAA? Difference with NRC
The primary distinction between CAA and NRC lies in their scope and purpose. CAA is specifically designed to provide refuge to minorities from neighboring countries, encompassing Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Christians, and Buddhists from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. However, the controversy arises from the exclusion of Muslims from this list. The government argues that the inclusion of minorities from other countries is necessitated by the intolerance prevailing in their places of origin.
Conversely, Indian Muslim leaders have asserted that this legislation is not aimed at assisting minorities from other nations, but rather serves as a means to coerce Muslims to depart from India, constituting a political maneuver by the government. Opposition figures, alongside Muslim leaders, have voiced their opposition to this stance. They argue that it infringes upon Article 14, which enshrines principles of equality.
If we simplify the CAA (Citizen Amendment Act), it offers legal citizenship to minorities from other countries who are facing harassment for their religious beliefs. The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a database of Indian citizens who have documents or proof of their citizenship.
Why are Muslims against CAA & NCR?
If we understand in one line why Muslims are against CAA, the act includes refugees of all religions but not Muslims because their countries are already Islamic, and they don’t have any fear in terms of religious faith. Now, let’s talk about NCR. Before finalizing this data, the government will implement NPR. Under NPR, government officials will visit households to compile a list of Indian citizens. During this process, they will identify individuals whose names or records do not match the database.
Now, doubtful citizens will be ordered to prove their citizenship by providing any document. If they fail to do so, they will be sent to a detention center. The other country minorities who have been living here in India since December 31, 2014, will be granted citizenship under CAA, but Muslim refugees will be sent to detention centers.
All Indian minorities have valid Indian citizenship documents which were helped to made by the then state governments adjoining border countries, so NO need to panic, our population of 140+ crores will remain intact. Why people like Vijay, etc sending alarming quotes without knowing the truth. You were not worthy in your art not even as a flickering politician.Rather trying to misguide and loosen our unity.Rather India is trying to register the harassed minority people of adjoining Muslim Dominated countries. There is no harm in it
The government should run a campaign first to ensure that illiterate Muslims in the country understand that the law is not harmful to them. There are some leaders who are trying to manipulate them for political gain.
There are a number of people illegally entering India every year, data of citizens must be maintained by the government. Let the government do its work.
