The editorial policy guidelines set forth here shall apply to all the contributors, journalists, content-creators and photographers associated with Janbharat Times.
These guidelines shall direct and command the staff to pursue the right course of action when treading through treacherous waters. Both employees and freelancers are expected to respect, maintain and refer to these guidelines as while working for Janbharat Times. Any exceptions or eventualities to guidelines may arise in the dynamic world of journalism but the over-arching principles remain basic.
- The freedom of speech and expression includes the right to hold, receive and impart information that can be of public interest. The press shall be provided with all the facilities, access to public information and resources free of any constraints to bring together and publish facts and opinions that fulfill the public’s fundamental right to be informed about the happenings of the nation.
- The press shall practice intensive investigative journalism without any fear or favor to publish corrupt-free news in the nation’s interest.
- The press shall be committed to gathering accurate information from trustworthy sources that can be cross-checked for accuracy and truthfulness at any point in time.
- The journalists shall obey all the laws while gathering news, putting together articles, taking photographs or performing any other journalistic duty.
- The press shall refrain from promoting or reporting any personal, political, societal or industrial agenda that runs counter to the public interest.
- Any news published shall be free from the author’s or the newspaper’s opinion or bias of any kind.
- The journalists shall not rely on any information provided by untruthful or mischievous sources or obtained through unlawful, dishonest or unfair means like bribes.
- The journalists should quote the spokesperson as it is. Indirect speech shall not be attributed, sentence-by-sentence, to the speaker.
- The writers shall clearly differentiate between facts and opinions. Facts just are justifiable and verifiable, while opinions shouldn’t emerge out of thin air as well.
- The reporters shall not suppress, distort, misinterpret or criticize any information that could be of relevance to the readers.
- The writers are entitled to pass comments of matters of national interest only by clearly differentiating between honest personal comment and factual information.
- The journalists shall be extra careful when covering matters that involve the private lives and concerns of individuals, bearing in mind that any right to privacy or breach of confidence may be overridden by legitimate public interest.
- The publication shall work towards exposing crimes, anti-social conduct, and misdemeanor and protect public health and safety by the means of honest reporting.
- Any information related to matters involving deaths, suicide, indecency or obscenity shall be presented with due sensitivity.
- Matters relating to brutality, murder, rape, crime, theft, and hatred shall be reported with exceptional care, sympathy, and honesty.
